Day 1: Getting to Taiwan

Scoot – Cheap flight to Taiwan

It was a last minute plan to visit Taiwan! Scoot Airlines offer of $300 (SGD) return flight per person between Singapore and Taiwan with check-in 20kg bag was too good to ignore. We had done a whole Taiwan island DIY trip many years ago… seen practically every worthly sights. This time our trip to Taiwan was for a particular “festive event”. The Sky Lantern Festival!

Picking Up our Rental Car

We had booked our car with Chailease Auto Rental Car Services, its pricing was pretty good as compared to others. We were worried if we had gotten a “lousy” local car rental shop but after finding out that Chailease Auto cobrand with Hertz  we were pretty confident with the company. A staff pick us up at the airport in a white Toyota Sienta. He drove us to Chailease outlet near the airport about 6.5 km to complete the paper work

We were surprised that instead of giving us a Toyota Avio which we had booked online we were handed the same Toyota Sienta that picked us up from the airport. It was a bigger car, a free upgrade as according to Chailease and best of all our bags were already in the car boot!

Up go our Tom Tom car GPS, its attachment  to the windscreen had long “disintegrated” so we improvised with “scotch tape”!!. A cheap solution to a complex problem.

After picking up the rental car we drove 14km to Taoyuan city central where we checked into our hotel for the night. 14km though was a short distance took more than 30 minutes as the roads were busy and moving was slow. We had planned for a relaxing time in Taiwan, no rush or frantic sightseeing when touched down.

Around our stay were many restaurants and eateries. A five minutes walk brought us to the next street and we entered the first restaurant that captured our attention!

茶自點莊敬店

This Chinese eatery was very unique, its seats were “swing chairs”, suspended on chains anchored to the ceiling. We ordered our food and had a delicious meal. The cost of the meal was 720TWD (SGD$30).

Our Stay

Our stay Taoyuan was at Six Star Motel, booked on booking.com. It had good reviews and we were not disappointed. Check in was at the entrance into the carpark where without getting out of the car we conveniently got our key and room number and breakfast instruction.
