We drove south east to the east coast of the island to reach Yilan. We did some google searches to find some “must eat” food of Yilan. First was the “famous yam icecream of Yilan”. It was located in Toucheng of Yilan County.

We bought two small cups of icecream for TWD55 each at 阿宗芋冰城. The icecream was icy and not creamy at all. Not our type of icecream at all! There was no yam pieces in the icecream and the yam favour was hardly tastable!!

Two shops away on the same side as the icecream store was a shop 德芳 selling Scallion Pancake (Chong You Ping, 葱油饼). I was greedy for a taste even when this store was not the Yilan Famous Scallion shop. The scallion pancake tasted so good, so yummy especially after the tasteless icecream.

On the north end of Toucheng was a futuristic looking museum. It looked like a sinking glass building. The museum was in a park, there was a lake and the museum was just by the lake. The huge building and its reflection in the water looked amazing.

The museum exhibited cultural stuffs but we were only interested in the architectural design of the museum.

Finally we drove into Yilan town and headed for the famous Yilan scallion pancakes. It was difficult to find empty car parking lots by the streets near the scallion stores. We drove a few loops but could not find a place to park our car. Then we spotted an underground carpark just on the street perpendicular to the street of the scallion store. The underground carpark was just in front of a Elementary School. Once we got up to the surface level of the carpark, crossed the road we were at the start of the street to the scallion shop.

There was already a long queue from shop up the street to the intersection and the queue bent round the corner and continued for another 100 metres. We queued for about 45 minutes before we reached the front and made our order. Yummy, yummy, we loved the scallion pancakes. So puffy and fragrant.

Night Market at Yilan

That evening we went to Yilan Dongmen Night Market for our dinner. Near the market was a paid parking place with many lots. From the carpark we could already see the lighted gantry to the night market. We walked up and down the lanes of the night market but did not find a place to sit down and order our meals.

The night market generally looked rather untidy and unkempt. We walked out of the night market and found a store selling beef noodle with 30 years of history behind it. The beef noodle was generally fine, nothing fantastic. Each bowl of noodle costed TWD110

On the way back to the carpark, we saw a desert store just at the start of the night market street. It sold hot grass jelly, one of my favourite deserts. We bought two deserts for a total of TWD85 and brought them back to our hotel to enjoy.

Our Stay in Yilan

Our stay was at Dubai Motel. It was a cylindrical shape hotel. The hotel concept was interesting. We drove up to the entrance of the carpark and completed the registration of our room though the car window. The attendant gave us our room key and breakfast information, there after we continued driving forward up a circular driveway to the 3rd level. We located our unit which looked like a car garage. After we parked our car we pressed a switch to lower the garage door and entered our room though a door at the interior of the garage. Amazing we had our personal garage!

Our room was pretty big and long. Nearer to the door was a king bed, a tv area and a small counter with coffee, tea and a kettle. At the further end was a big sunken bathtub, a shower area, WC and a wash basin. Generally the room felt rather cold, the furnishing looked a bit old and the sunken bathtub bathroom made the place felt abit sleazy.

Breakfast was part of the package and was served on the highest level (6th floor) of the motel. Food was simple and okay. The cost of one night stay was TWD2280 for two persons.
